Data Accuracy & Sourcing

Where our data comes from, why every fact is dated, and how we distinguish allegations from final discipline.

Effective date: June 26, 2026IsItLicensed

Every contractor record on IsItLicensed is a reproduction of a public record from the California Contractors State License Board (CSLB). We show the CSLB’s own status labels, attributed and dated, with a link to the official record so you can verify us. IsItLicensed is not affiliated with or endorsed by the CSLB or the State of California. Always verify against the official record.

Our source

License, insurance, bond, personnel, and enforcement data is sourced from the California Contractors State License Board (CSLB) public data, refreshed on a schedule. We do not add, infer, or fabricate any field the CSLB withholds — including contractor email addresses and other personal contact information, which the CSLB does not publish.

Why everything is dated “as of”

A license status can change at any time. Each page shows the date of the last successful data pull (“as of [date]”). A snapshot may be out of date or incomplete — the authoritative, current record always lives with the CSLB.

Allegations vs. final discipline

We carefully distinguish between a complaint or allegation and a final disciplinary action. As the CSLB itself notes, a disclosed complaint is only an allegation of a probable violation and does not by itself affect the status of a license. We reproduce the official record neutrally and never editorialize, imply guilt, or label a contractor a “scammer.”

Fair, accurate, attributed reproduction

Our legal basis for publishing official enforcement records is the fair-report privilege: we reproduce the record accurately, attribute it to the CSLB, date it, and link to the source. If you believe a record is inaccurate, please use our dispute & correction process.

Disclosure retention

We age out disclosures on a schedule consistent with the CSLB’s own retention windows (for example, citations and accusations are not displayed indefinitely). We never charge a contractor to remove or modify a record.
